First All Points Bulletin details

Last week at Game Developers¡¯ Conference 2008, Realtime Worlds, the creators of Crackdown, showed off its first massive multiplayer online game called All Points Bulletin (or just APB) in a presentation titled ¡°My first MMO¡± headed by none other than Dave Jones. Head inside for the first details on the MMO, plus two demonstration videos.
Before you shrug APB off as another fantasy MMO along the lines of World of Warcraft, note that the developer is doing its very best to deviate from the regular formula found in most games of this genre. For one, the ever so present grinding won¡¯t play a role here whatsoever and there will be no character leveling. Instead, character progression will be determined by character customization. Another element that will separate APB from the rest of the pack is the setting. Unlike World of Warcraft or Guild Wars, Realtime Worlds¡¯ MMO will be set in a contemporary world, one where everyone will feel right at home. Thus, the team hopes to replace ¡°geek with chic¡± and cater the game to a wider audience.
One of the ways Realtime Worlds hopes to accomplish this ¡°geek with chic¡± substitution is to give you the freedom of choosing the person you want to play as by introducing a feature called ¡°Free Form Customization.¡± This character-creation tool is like nothing you¡¯ve seen before and puts the ones found in EA Sports games to shame. Don¡¯t believe us? See it in action for yourselves below:
What about the gameplay you might ask? The premise is simple: you¡¯re either on the side of Enforcement (or APB) or a Gang. If you play as a Gang member, your goal is to commit crimes. As an Enforcement member, it¡¯s your job to stop the crooks. Whatever side you choose, you¡¯ll start off like anybody else ¨C a nobody with little to differentiate you from other players. However, as you progress in the game you¡¯ll look cooler and will thus stand out as an experienced player. Check out the video below to see how the gameplay works:
All Points Bulletin is in development for the Xbox 360 and PC and is slated for release in Summer 2009.
