"It was interesting that in the rounds they had time to prepare, the drinks weren't nearly as good as the final round when they were forced to be creative," he said. "We saw some really interesting concepts."

Vitacca took the most chances, winning two of the four rounds, with a cucumber, fresh sage, pummello grapefruit, lime and mint martini he crafted for the vodka round, and the exotic Mambo, Vitacca's signature cocktail, featuring citron vodka, muddled basil, fresh mango pur¨¦e, fresh lime and coconut rum. Isaacs won the people's choice award and the secret-ingredient round with his Strawberry Kumquat Caipirinha.

In the end, though, it was Spike, the diminutive, spunky blonde barkeep at Wills Fargo, who garnered the most points and took home the gold, along with the grand prize ¡ª a stay at the Paso Robles Inn with a winetasting and tour of the J. Lohr Winery.

"I love kumquats," Brock said of the secret ingredient a few days after her victory. "The first night back (at Wills Fargo), everyone said, 'We want the kumquat drink!'" Brock calls it the "Poquito" for its likeness to the mojito, a Caribbean cocktail made with rum.

"It was great fun," Brock said. "Every time I looked up, there were my regular customers." In fact, about 20 of Brock's regulars hired a bus for their road trip from Carmel Valley to Cannery Row. "So they were drinking, but they weren't driving," she said.

Andahazy, who's been involved in dozens of bartending competitions, either as a competitor or judge, loved the frenzied vibe from the audience.

"I've never seen the type of enthusiasm that came out in the Monterey crowd," he said.

Between rounds, there was plenty of brisket, ribs, coleslaw and fried Twinkies to go around, prepared by Willy's Executive Chef Gene Moana and his staff. Housed in the historic Booth fish reduction plant a block up from Cannery Row, the restaurant was standing-room-only for the contest, which was free to the public. Attendees received door prizes from drawings held throughout the evening, including T-shirts, hats and iPod cozies, as well as dinner and lunch gift certificates from Willy's. The event was sponsored by Willy's, Dan Warner of Wine Warehouse, Square One Organic Vodka, Riedel, Blue Coat American Gin and The Herald.
