Willy's Smokehouse and All-American Grill took on the atmosphere of a prize fight last Thursday as three local mixologists duked it out for first prize in the Best Bartender of Monterey County Contest.

The event was the culmination of a selection process that began with Herald readers nominating their favorite local bartenders for consideration. After receiving nearly 400 nominations, Herald staff paid anonymous visits to the top 10 votegetters. The list was then pared down to the outstanding three who competed Thursday.

Raphael "Ray" Isaacs of the Portola Caf¨¦ in the Monterey Bay Aquarium; Karen "Spike" Brock of Wills Fargo, Carmel Valley; and Anthony "Antman" Vitacca of Montrio Bistro, Monterey put on a show in front of a packed house (an estimated 300 of their most ardent fans). Partygoers chanted the names of their favorite mixologists, held handpainted signs and waved glowing blue cubes like cigarette lighters at a rock concert.

Herald Go! entertainment editor Mac McDonald emceed, explaining the contest rules and interviewing the contestants as they crafted their cocktails for the judges ¡ª Pat Ottone, owner of Lalapalooza and Elli's; Zole Andahazy, bar manager at Bernardus Lodge; and H. Ehrmann of Elixir in San Francisco and vice president of the U.S. Bartenders Guild. Judging was based on a point system that took into account the appearance, aroma and taste of each cocktail.

create a cocktail with a secret ingredient revealed just 15 minutes prior to the last round. "Battle Kumquat" resulted in three concoctions as unique as the contestants themselves.

Andahazy came away impressed with the contestants' talent under pressure.
