Telstra BigPond is distributing 100,000 free copies of Pirates of the Burning Sea to Australian gamers.

By pre-registering at pirates.gamearena.com.au, gamers can download Pirates or secure one of the 100,000 DVD copies, which will be available from February 27.

The game includes a seven-day trial subscription and on-going play will cost from $15.95 a month.

Set in the Caribbean in 1720, Pirates of the Burning Sea is a massively multiplayer online role playing game in which players can captain their own ships, swordfight and interact with thousands of other players from around the world. The game has been in development at Flying Lab Software since 2002.

Next week Screen Play will have an interview with Flying Lab Software CEO Russell Williams, who hopes Pirates can quickly become the number two MMO after World of Warcraft.

"We are delighted to be working with BigPond to bring Pirates of the Burning Sea to Australian fans," says Mr Williams. "We are looking forward to welcoming Australian games to the online Pirates community and we're sure the hype will be at fever pitch by the time we launch."
