County Pledges Sales Tax Money For Vanguard Stimulation Project

Pottawatomie County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to kick in $125,000 in economic development sales tax funds to the Vanguard Stimulation project.
The action came after the oversight committee for those funds recommended that the county participate in helping the new company prepare its site in the Wolverine Industrial Park in north Shawnee. Vanguard is expected to invest about $65 million in the Shawnee operation.
The county money will actually go to the Shawnee Economic Development Foundation (SEDF), which is spearheading the fundraising effort. The SEDF pledged $250,000 to help cover infrastructure costs, including utilities, for the project. The City of Shawnee put up another $125,000 and the Shawnee Industrial Authority $75,000. The state will provide money for an access road.
The county money will be subtracted from the SEDF pledge, allowing that group to reinvest some of the funds for the sale of the land to Vanguard for future industrial sites.
Dist. 2 Commissioner Jerry Richards made the motion to approve the payment, but added that he is still concerned about helping economic development projects in the county's smaller communities with the sales tax funds, which stood at about $700,000 before Tuesday's action.
